83mpg cruising the interstate

Got my best average mileage so far (83mpg) for the interstate portion (I-26 from Weaverville, NC to Flat Rock, NC) of my commute going home. Roads were dry, temp was 75F with no significant winds, and with a moderate amount of traffic. I was running at the speed limit to 5 over for the most part, with the speed dropping a few mph on the uphills and going 5 to 10 over on the downhills (with a Cd of 0.17, I gain speed quickly on the downhill despite driving a 2100 lbs car). I was helped out on this trip by being followed by a panel truck towing a car that was taking the uphills at a leasurely pace which allowed me to drop my speed a little more on the uphills than I normally can given the traffic conditions. I normally get 77mpg on this stretch of highway. Who says you need a hybrid or diesel to get good mileage.

That's great! No hybrid could touch those numbers.

What was the speed limit, 65 mph? Since your car is so slick what is the best speed for FE and about what would that number (MPG)be for optimum conditions?

The speed limit is 55mph through most of Asheville (except for 50mph across the Smoky Park Bridge), 60mph in Buncombe county, and 65mph in most of Henderson county. On a flat road, my car gets about the same mileage from 30 to 65mph, with just a slight drop at 70mph. In hot, humid summer temps, that mileage is around 95mpg.

Thats awsome!!!!!!

I hope I can get my CRX up to those numbers.. after modifing the new nose I did notice considerably less need for throttle at cruising speeds and a lot longer ability to coast.. maintaining higher speeds far longer.. I'm hope I'm on my way to a 80-100mpg per tank car..

Now you just need to get a boattail installed on the back and you'll be on your way there.
