Mild Hybrid - DIY EV Conversion Motor?
Hello,
I've been reading for some time, but this is my first post. I really enjoy this creative community! I was reading random things on the internet when the thought came to me that the motor/generator from a mild hybrid like the Ram eTorque could be used for a DIY EV motorcycle or light vehicle. A CNET (ref. "2020-ram-1500-laramie-4x4-crew-cab-5-7-box-review") article indicated that the system adds 16 hp and 130 lb-ft of torque. The system only uses 48v, so DIY friendly (not hundreds). Has anyone else had this thought? Does anyone know if there are already threads on this? BTW, I'm a ME, not EE or Programmer, so I don't know about the details about how to make it work, once connected. I would love to hear what others think. |
Bunches of threads regarding this on DIYELECTRICCARS, but I haven't seen one completed yet which isn't an indication of anything.
Which way are you leaning: GM starter alternator or motor drive line attached? |
The only flaw I can imagine with using that motor would be if its rated for continuous use. I'm not real familiar with them, 16hp but 130lbft... does it have a gear reduction?

Controlling it would be the problem. You'd either need to be an electronics/programming whiz, or else need to source out your own inverter/controller. |
It driveable with a toy airplane high voltage/current 3phase controller, so anything chinese of sufficient current and voltage would work.
like a golf cart controller. |

Nah, couple hundred for a 48v, 300 amp controllers on ALI or fleabay. Will they make rated? Who knows.

My $100 80a peak/40a cont. 100v peak controller was a steal, as far as I am concerned. Plain DC motor controllers come in that price range. |
