I've always been curious about rotary valved engines:
Rotary-Valve Internal Combustion Engines.

Dealing with a variable speed, rotation, would be a lot easier and avoids the valve-piston interference risk. But curious doesn't mean I'm ordering some machine tools. <grins>

Google up Coates rotary valve for one example in an automotive application.

I have heard that durability and sealing have been the primary problems with that.

Hmm. I had no idea people were developing their own home-brew solenoid valves. I'd love to be able to adapt this onto the head of my S2000's engine. Is there any literature that shows it being reliable enough to go into a street-driven vehicle? All the links I've seen on that page go to model sized engines.
