I wonder if a small solar panel would be enough. diode main power and have the solar panel after the diode. might be enough for those "brownout" situations??

how much power DOES the guino consume?

5A is WAY too much fuse for the MPGuino, 5 amps(that's 5ampsX12volts=60 watts!) is more than enough to fry it. You want a fuse in the .1-.5A range if you want to protect the unit from surges. I'm not sure exactly what the draw of the unit is, you can check it with a multimeter set to amps, and put in line with the positive.
