There was one old kit car that used an efficient variable transmission (belt that didn't slip) as its method of speed control.

it was 48v but could hit 55mph despite that, I forget which model but I have a feeling that type of system would be a very good efficiency addition to homebrew EVs.

It could keep your motor at the optimum RPM for the desired power output.
