I have found plenty of engine-less Metros, Camrys, Corollas, Subarus and more on Craigslist, all under $500.

Be sure to set attainable goals. Many projects start with good intention but fail to reach completion. Any project car takes a lot of time and patience. First time welding and first time building an electric car is a huge undertaking.

Agreed! I'm working on one myself - and it's daunting. I'm working with some friends, and the hardest thing (next to money) is time. Some days I feel like I want to say humbug, but then I see the parts I have and I keep it alive in my mind for another day. Then, out of the blue, I'll see or get something I wasn't expecting, and that provides enough jazz to keep the dream alive!

I was just starting to bum a little, and then on Saturday while at my Grandma's 83rd birthday party, I was talking EVs and my uncle volunteered a Jetta he has sitting for my conversion! Now, I'm juiced again for a while.

That's the kind of stuff that keeps you goin'!
