My new personal best!

Today, I broke the 40mpg barrier!

Last week, I installed a Rostra cruise control in my xB, and today was the first chance I had to really use it, since I had been roped into going to see some friends out in Rochester, NY. I filled my tank before I left, and right when I returned to town on my way home, and managed 40.78mpg! Just about the whole trip was with CC set to 65 (except the stretch of I90 in Buffalo where the limit is 55). I'd turn it off for the handful of sizeable hills, but I don't think that's a huge difference-- it's mostly a fairly flat trip.

Beyond the efficiency gain, the other benefit of cruise is that it made today's drive vastly less fatiguing than it otherwise would have been, so I came out ahead on several fronts.

I'd be willing to speculate that I could do even better with hotter weather, actually. It's fairly cool here still (50s at night, 60s by day).

Hiya, and Congratulations!

If you can keep it to 55mph, then you would get even better mileage?

Thanks!

I probably could do bettery by slowing down, but I don't want to be that guy driving 10mph under the limit. There's a point where one is impeding traffic, and I don't want to find it. On my way home last night, I went a little bit slower, just because there was much less traffic, anyway (~62-63mph), and I'm sure that helped me too.

On the other hand, I could just take back roads for that and similar trips, even if it's a bit of a compromise-- long stretches at 50-55mph, but occasional stop'n'go in various towns.

That stretch of I-90 is flat as a pancake. Good job!
