Need the aero guys on here help???

As some of you know I'm building a 71 Camaro dual purpose car for Racing and FE. My question is where is the best place to pick up air for the engine? I'm thinking the cowl area before the windshield, or an air vent at the front on the lower valance.

In race mode it will be flowing around 160 lbs./min worth of air and FE mode around 3 lbs./min. In both modes it will have a grill plug. Race mode there won't be much time for the engine to get hot. In FE mode the engine runs very cool due to lean burn.

It's a 1/4 mile car. Top speed around 180mph.

Maybe a flapper valve so you can have cowl in FE mode and a bellmouth snorkel tube at ground level for the track?

Thanks for all the help, guys. Here is a short video I made of the car.

As you can see the hood already has a vented spot at the end of the cowl. From what I have read so far, I think I will utilize this area for the engine air pick up and seal off all the rest of the front areas including the grill.

180-MPH quarter, back of the envelope

1) With the forced-induction, the compressor is going to 'get' the air, whether it receives any help from ram-air or not.
2) A look at some simple, Newtonian, F=M X A online horsepower calculators suggest that, say, for a 4,000-lb race car, with full NHRA-approved roll-cage, onboard fire suppression, driver and safety gear, we might be looking at up to an 1,820-bhp requirement in order to trip the timing light at 180-mph.
3) If so, one might look to something like a Hekimian 632-CID, big-block Chevy, with air drawn through two HOLLEY Dominator EFI units, atop a roots-type blower.
4) Accounting for the intake manifold, supercharger, dual- HOLLEYs, and maybe velocity-stacks, it makes for a 'tall' package.
5) On a 'standard-atmosphere' race day, from zero-to-180 mph, you'd never see more than 0.56- psi of ram-air boost, but it would be there for the taking.
6) The HOT ROD MAGAZINE Project Red Hat, Bonneville land speed record, 1981 Camaro used something like K&N's 100-8517-NHRA Pro Stock hood scoop, which at 244-mph, saved 150-hp worth of aero drag.
7) At 180-mph, we'd be looking at saving around 60-hp.
8) The HOLLEYs will flow up to 1,475 cfm each.
9) The 160-lbs / minute of air works out at 2,133 cfm, or 1,067 cfm / carb..
10) The Pro Stock scoop may be large enough to hide all the naughty bits inside, including velocity stacks.
It faces forwards, so you'd get the free 0.56 psi.

I can't vouch for the online calculator. It has no provision for frontal area, drag coefficient, number of gears, tire compound, etc.. Very simplistic.

Looks like a fun ( expensive ) project. Love the 1,200-hp turbo-4-banger!
I never saw anything like that in the 60s.

Online Horsepower Calculator Reality Check

My rat's nest at home produced some data which throws a caution flag on the field of the so-called online horsepower calculator.

Currently, the 2022 Rimac Nevera is the world's 'quickest' production automobile:
* At 4,750-pounds curb weight
* four motors
* all-wheel drive
* 1-speed transmission
* 1,914- horsepower total
* 1,741 lb-ft torque total ( constant over entire velocity range )
* 2.481- pounds / hp
* 0-60 mph in 1.85-seconds
* 0-100 mph in 4.3 seconds
* 1/4-mile = 8.52-seconds elapsed-time
* @ 167.51-mph.
* 258-mph top speed

This is a 'real' car, tested in the real world, by qualified personnel, with as much precision as is likely to be experienced.

All of which may be compared to an 'online' estimate of 1,820-hp for 4,000-lbs, at 180-mph in the 1/4-mile.
