New Feature: EcoModder Team Competition
 

Hope you're all having a good Sunday. I wanted to show you all this and give you a chance to play with this rather than just delaying the release forever.

EcoModder Team Competition

There's a lot to be added and changed, but overall, it works and can be used, so I wanted to put it out there for you all to interact with and give suggestions on.

When I thought of the idea, I felt like this:

Why? Because it's such an elementary idea and I think a lot of people on the site would really like it. As such I decided just to code it up over the weekend and let you good folks have at it even before it's fully done.

Hit me with suggestions.

I like it! I think it would be cool to set up the occasional competition between different teams for a month or two. Turns an individual 'sport' into a team sport ;)

My suggestions, which are probably already on your list:

-On each team page, show each member and their stats, and a picture for their car, if they have one.
-Make it so the 'leader' of the team has to approve each member, or some system to prevent people with Honda's joining team Toyota, or something like that.
-Make an error message show up when you try to join a team that you're already a part of.

How are the stats calculated? By total miles/total gallons, or by ΣMPG/# of team members?

We could do brackets or something in the future, or have a "challenge" function where you can challenge a specific team.

Is there a way to remove yourself from a team, then? I wasn't thinking that people would try to intentionally ruin stats, but rather accidentally add themselves to the wrong team. It probably wouldn't happen too often though, so I guess they could just PM you to delete them.

Yeah, I should have a quit team thing show up in place of the join team feature, good idea. Right now I'm working on the members' display on the team pages. Got it working partially but the member count is broken on the main page :)

That's cool I wish I had a better car I'm so competitive and it's hard when the Neon is only capable of so much. So I guess I will take it as high as it will go with a 14 year old automatic 2.0. Any gain is better than no gain.

What if someone wants to join a team who's FE is higher than his? Can he be denied entry?
What if Team X would be better than Team Y if it wasn't for Team X's member Xx with really low FE. Nasty things might happen then, but I'm assuming we're all grown up (mature is the better word) and won't get carried away.

Someone join up with honda...I feel like a cheater.

Furthermore, I plan to display the team affiliation with the vehicle data in posts and perhaps creat badges like the normal fuel log signature badge for showing off/sharing team stats.

Tried to make a team using google chrome....when I hit create I got a blank white page. Maybe it's just a chrome thing.

Oh, I get it: You're trying to get Basjoos in your team. Naughty, naughty, shame on you ;)

Yeah, I can't test with Chrome since I'm on a mac, though I don't know why it wouldn't work since I'm using very standard PHP.

Perhaps you're not including an image? I haven't marked out the required fields or done error reporting yet. There should be a big BETA since all over the thing :p

Can you put an if to exclude cars with 90 days averages of 0 mpg from the Avg. Fuel Economy calc? See TEAM VW AUDI Group.

I added my xA to the Team Toyota!

I looked for my car in the list and it's not there... It lets me add someone else's car to team honda though. My old car ('93 corolla) is in the list though. Could it be looking at the 1st (or "0th") car in someone's garage?

That's real weird. It should be matching based on unique number userid.........

I'll have to investigate it, but if in the mean time you want your civic on the team I would gladly add it manually :)

Right on, I wouldn't fool around with anything that isn't manual ;)

edit: worked when I tried it again. The first time I tried, I saw a huge list with dozens of cars, this time it just came up with the two in my garage.

Were you not signed in the first time? Might be a bug I need to fix...

I know I was logged in, but I just tried logging off and that did it again.

Nah, people can have whatever team they want. I just made Honda and Toyota first to be arbitrary :)

Been changing around the team display page to include the owners of the vehicles. Will next be creating links from all that data to around the site.

Can anyone think of some charts/graphs they would want in conjunction with this to show off data, etc?

Created the following teams :

• diesel, for diesel road vehicles
• oldContinents, for people outside New Continent (North America)

I can't register the megane on both teams :(

The diesel category is a good idea.

So, it's America vs the Rest of the World, like usual ;)
I guess that South America is in the New Continent category, though I don't know if I've seen anyone here from SA.
Decisions, decisions...

Should we allow people to register for more than one team? I decided against it initially because if it is going to be a little competitive (the idea) we do want to force some decisions and not have two teams like "Team VW" and "Team TDI" basically being the same people.

Also, I'm kicking around an idea for how to do autoposting of new stats from the competition on a weekly/biweekly level.

I think people should be able to join more than 1 team so you can do head to head challenges kind of like the Ultimate Ecomodder Competition (or any number of guys against each other). Percent over EPA is already factored in so running another competition like that would be much easier.

I would "hope" nobody would join two teams in the same level (like Toyota, Chevy, Ford, Honda etc.) as they are grouped by vehicle make and it doesn't make sense.

But, multiple group competitions going on at once would be cool.

Much to consider. Perhaps when I get home on Sunday I will run a poll seeing what people want to do :)

I've also thought about "categories": Someone could be on both Team Toyota or Honda and Team Hybrid. The Toyotas, Hondas, Fords, etc., would be on one level, while gassers, hybrids, diesels on another. I'm not yet sure how to make this work. But the this is going in the right direction:)

That's a good idea, actually. It might make more since just because we don't want to be comparing team honda insight to team pick up truck, necessarily :)

I just joined Team Metro. Too bad I don't drive much, so my numbers won't get updated often. (Or maybe that's a good thing.)
