New guy, old car.

Figure I should say hi. Hi!

I'm Casey, a third-year medical student in the Heart of the Midwest, Ohio. My car is a well-loved '93 BMW 318is, stock except for high-resistance plug wires. I've played with it for a long time and have pulled the real-world mileage up to 22/32 from the original EPA ranks of 18/28, so I'd say I'm doing pretty well.

Now to read. How do I get that economy logo so many have in their signatures?

Hi Casey,

Welcome. My SE-R has similar EPA estimated mileage, so you can probably achieve similar mileage as what I get.

From the Garage Fuel Log for your car, copy the properties of the image at the bottom of the page. Insert that in your signature as an image.

40 and change mpg? How'd you pull that off?

Welcome Casey...

You have a great platform in which to start. It's too bad BMW didn't use a 4-cylinder in the new 1-series. Luxury/Performance, IMHO it needs a 4-banger.

Plus, the advantage of economy.

I have a similarly-sized engine, power, and EPA figures. It's entirely possible to hit the high 30's and beyond, with a little work. Do you have the automatic, or manual? (I'm stuck with the auto)...

Best of luck to you in Med School! What quadrant of Ohio are you in? (I'm from there originally, got my Undergrad work there, parents still live there, etc.)

Mostly from driving slower. My lifetime hypermiling avg in the SE-R is 38.0 mpg. The 40.79 mpg is just 2 or 3 tanks over the last 90 days. I only get 26 mpg driving 72 mph with cruise control. That rises to 32-34 mpg at 62 mph, and 38-40 mpg at 55 mph. If I pulse and glide, I can hit 45 mpg on a 400 mile highway drive.

Slow back-country roads are my bread and butter. I can P&G 50-55 mpg on them. No structural mods to my cars yet, except for removing the spoiler on my SE-R.

Northwest- Toledo, to be specific.

It's the auto. Runs like a champion, save needing a new fuel filter.

The 4-cylinders are still around, though you have to get them imported from Europe directly- they're not sold in the US, same with the high-efficiency diesels. Sad, I'd love a 120D.
