Well in that case I think another car is justifiable. I would not buy a VW period just because of the horrid reliability. Worthless anecdote- My friend had an older Jetta diesel that went through a fuel pump and then an engine in very short order.
I was considering a Chevy Prizm manual to replace my Subaru Legacy that was rear-ended. The car is a re-badged Toyota Corolla, so it's a little cheaper than if you had bought the Toyota. They were only made 1998-2002. I couldn't find any that were reasonably priced, and it's a bit cramped for me (6' 2"), so I just bought a TSX.
