New Prius!

Ok, not mine, I'm still driving my Insight. It just passed 280k miles yesterday!

Was visiting family over Christmas, borrowed my mom's '08 Prius and wrecked it on a deer.

She just replaced today with a nice, newer '14 Prius.

While having owned the 2nd gen, she averaged mid 40s in the winter and around 50 in the summer with no hypermiling, with a best trip in the low 60s. I averaged around 50 winter and 60 summer with just mild hypermiling, with a best trip of 69.1 mpg. Never broke over 70 mpg in that car but hopefully I'll be up in the summer sometime and can give it a crack in the new gen 3.

I hope there was an insurance settlement.

I hope not, as deductibles can be expensive, and worse the higher premium renewal from filing a claim can be more than the deductible long term.

That damage looks repairable. Heck, the car looks drivable still.

When in doubt it was always a deer that hit you and not you that hit a deer. *laughs*

(liability insurance with Unins/underins will cover it with no increase in premiums)

Even so, the deer is woefully underinsured, and sometimes hits and runs.

Those damn deer. No wonder those guys walk around the woods with guns.

Oh deer! I had a deer jump out in front of my Avalon last year just before the COVID crisis hit. I ended up just fixing it myself even though I had full coverage. My deductible was $1,000 and I knew the repair would be much more than that. But I threw on a used headlight and it looks fine.

Nice Prius by the way!

So I'm guessing they totaled it out. Have we decided if we are buying it out? I imagine the buy back after totaling it has to be almost nothing. A new bumper and headlight away from having a cheap Sport Utility Hybrid.
Forgot to add I hit a deer in my Blue Prius as well in the same spot a month ago. I stopped to miss hitting a sprinting deer from the right side and stopped so short a deer hit me in the drivers fender lol.
I just pulled mine back out and was good to go though so no claim.
Depending on how they used your insurance the uninsured deductible is much less that the others and sometimes $0 like when they waived it for the second guy who hit the Prius and drove off because he didn't have insurance.
I bet bare minimum you do those two repairs with used parts you can sell it on facebook marketplace (new age craigslist) right now for a crazy covid price.

Car was totaled and they accepted the payout, which covered over 2/3 the cost of the newer car. When I hit the deer I tried to take the hit on just the driver's side to avoid smashing the radiator and necessitating a tow, but it crumpled up a bit of the frame on that side. The car is still drivable, but was estimated at well over $4k in damages.

We thought about fixing it ourselves, but with the car being a hybrid, resale value on it would be minimal with a rebuilt title, and my family usually sells their cars when they hit ~250k miles. The hybrid battery, which was quite robust and new when the car was bought 2 years ago, is starting to show some slight signs of wear too, so with factoring that in they decided to take the money and get a newer car.
