New Prius and brake light problems.

I recently purchased a 2005 Prius to replace my 2000 Metro. I love my metro, but recently lost my left leg above the knee, and working the clutch was difficult.
So far I have driving the Prius just under 100 miles and am getting about 51.3 mpg. This will improve as I learn how to drive it. The expected milage should be similar to what I was getting with the Metro.

The left brake light was out when I bought the car.
After much work, the the left brake light now works, but the right brake light is now out.

I like the Prius, but hate the design of the brake light system.
I wonder what Toyota was thinking.

I had a tail light go out on my 2004 Prius as well. I simply replaced the entire unit after looking into trying to fix it. For as many issues as I've had with the car (that is the only one I can think of), I'm pretty happy with it.
