Not to get off topic, before the EPA required the car to be cold and run at 70mph, the TDI were listed at 48 IIRC. Real world was often higher. They weren't called Prius killers for nothing.

I've been digging, found about 7 billion articles about this speech but not one mention of the Detroit 50 mpg non-hybrid! I know I didn't imagine it; it's in the vid clip and the transcript...
