Yes, that is what I was trying to describe. The rpm does increase when in gear. Its all ECU control over the engine and transmission that make the big difference. On the newer car if you want to speed up down hill just kick it into neutral.

I don't think it's JUST the sidewalls, I just wanted to add that piece- I would bet it helps.

My van loose speed on given hill when empty, fully loaded on given hill I have to hit the brakes or risk a speeding ticket.

Another possibility is wear. Ever notice how old shoes are sloppier but become more comfortable as they get older? Everything gets looser as it becomes worn.

Looser = less friction.
