Series type hybrids are not very efficient compared to a very simple motor drives wheel directly setup. (at least this is what the C-car groups keeps telling me)

However if you drive an electric everyday like I do and want to venture out past the safe ranges were you "may" get stranded. A small generator is excellent insurance for not a lot of weight gain but if you make a habit of using it a lot for much of your travel you would do well to find someone on your route of travel or if for work ask your job if you can use 50 cents of their electricity. Your MPG off a generator even on a highly efficient diesel probably won't be that flattering.
