Yes, but it only gets a subset of information from the ECU. It gets data from the OBD-II port that the ECU is required to give because of OBD-II specification. The scangauge does *not* get fuel-injector pulse widths, so it has to figure out the fuel consumption using a formula that is indirect.

If your car ecu manage the fuel mixture like the scangauge, could be real mpg values, it depends on how your ecu calc the air/fuel, i don't know how a aftermarket scan gauge work but i thing they probably use the same method as cars

I agree the car ECU uses the other sensors to manage fuel consumption. This would be very true in open-loop mode. But I think closed-operation is *the* dominant factor in my gasoline car :

Thanks for the diesel/gasser comparison information. I definitely think the mods effect different drivetrains in different ways. A mod for a diesel may not work for a gasser. The reverse is also true.
