freebeard and bondo have covered your question very well.I just wanted to add, that Hucho reported that box-cavities were one of the few add-on devices tested which actually reduced drag.

Thanks for adding the link. I skimmed the first and last of it and found this in the last post. I'd missed it before.
Patent US6959958 - Aerodynamic combination for improved base drag reduction - Google Patents
It would appear that a box or detached plate perimeter should fall on the Template line. Other experimenters tested a detached plate with the middle 50% removed.
I interpret the single data point as a mod to their best performing candidate.

It folds away. Look up US Pat# 8,408,626 to see how it works. Just got the patent issued last year and it was my first total Pro Se effort which I am proud of.

What may be going on to lower aerodynamic drag?

How did you manage to mount this on the vertical surface?

I fabricated mechanical fasteners that captured the outside edge of the rear glass in the cab. No holes needed to be drilled into the truck cab at all.

What would you estimate for this top
with this one's skirts and air dam?
It looks more utilitarian. Was it?

tops and mpg
*The 'wing' and half-tonneau,without the blister was good for 9% hwy mpg.
*The blistered half-tonneau was good for 8% by itself.
*The 'wing' and blistered half-tonneau was good for around 10%.
*The aeroshell is good for around 12%.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
*The 'wing'/half-tonneau was really easy to live with. You could just toss stuff into the bed and easily retrieve it.Stuff under the tonneau was protected from wandering eyes and weather. The 'wing' shaded the cab's rear and took a little load off the air conditioner. With Plexiglass,at least on the passenger side, there wasn't any real blind spot when backing out of parallel parking into a busy street.
*The blister did create a rear vision issue.Electronics could easily deal with that today.
