Praise for an ignored ecobox

2008 Ford fiesta 1.4tdci

Basic ecomods

Last tank was a 73mpg (UK).

Easily hits 65mpg tank average despite almost entirely being used for sub 5 mile school/ work runs.

No DPF to worry about.

£30 per year tax since it was made before the UK government decide diesels were evil.

Costs buttons to insure and never lets me down despite having spent most of its 165k miles either being abused as a learner driver car, or as a builders work hack.

67bhp and a 15 second 0-60mph

I love my cr@p car!

Just don't ask about hills.... :snail:

I would love to get some of your Diesel cars on this side of the pond.

There is a reason why diesel is now considered to be not so great - might still be cheap and get great mpg but breathing is good too.

Fiestas are great. I would like to have one, but we would not fit in.

How do you achieve consumption like this? I struggle to keep under 5l/100 km ( around 49 US MPG). What mods? What driving style?

That's the funny part to me: no builder/contractor in my neck of the woods would be caught dead in anything smaller than a single-cab full-size pickup truck. And even most of the builders' helpers drive older, clapped out ones (almost always hauling air).

It's not utility. It's culture.

Sounds like a good excuse to perform experiences with vegetable oils as an alternate fuel :D

Using UK gallons helps wonders over US gallons

We don't have those here because our government is stupid and declared war on NOx.

i like this idea lots. I wonder if anyone has formally studied emissions from biodiesels.

Lemmy 08-19-2018 05:03 PM

The government is declaring war on nox here too, which is quite appropriate considering the increasing evidence linking it to significant health issues. I'm pleased the OP has found an economical car, but would be even more pleased if he didnt use a diseasel for such short journeys when they're at their most polluting.

Oh, and don't believe Ford Fiesta/Fusion fuel computer readouts - they're full of sheet. Do the maths. Mine used to read about 11% on the optimistic side.
