is rear screen for real?
i read this article and it claims 5.5% to 6.5% reduction in drag. i searched and didn't see any info here. is this been tried here?
https://www.bnl.gov/isd/documents/78582.pdf
i would like to give it a shot if it sounds like a realistic figure.
i also like the boat tail figure improvement of " 22.6%. At aft rear fairing length being 25% of its full length vehicle model drag factor is reduced by 16.1%."
i am new to all this so if i am missing something, let me know.

It's real. They're duplicating experimental research conducted in the mid-1930s and late-1960s,all proven.
The thing about the screen though,is that it only delivers these numbers at zero-yaw.Once you get into a crosswind (which is most of the time) the performance falls off.

So I'm looking at that report and a couple things jump out at me:
Much of it looks familiar, like work that has already been done.
It's a U.S. Dept. of Energy sponsored work but done in a scale wind tunnel in Ukraine? So I look up this program:
Quote:
To address concerns about unemployed or underemployed Soviet-era weapons scientists in Russia and other countries, the Department of Energy (DOE) established the Initiatives for Proliferation Prevention (IPP) program in 1994 to engage former Soviet weapons scientists in nonmilitary work in the short term and create private sector jobs for these scientists in the long term.
|
So the U.S. taxpayer is paying for former Soviet weapons scientists to replicate work that's already been done. Do I have that right?
Re: screen: they're reporting reduced drag even in yaw.

in yaw
In yaw,the windward flow will be directed inside the screen,to be blasted out top, bottom, and other side, creating a transverse flow jet.Doesn't sound good.
A breeding ground for vorticity.
