Returning member with an old Merc (300d estate)

Hi All,

I've not been on here for quite some time (since I sold my Skoda Octavia, 2015 I think?), But thought I'd reaquaint myself with this fine forum after my latest purchase..

It's a 1991 Mercedes s124 e300td. Powered by a normally aspirated OM603 6C 12v diesel with fully mechanical fuel pump.

In this model's case, the T stands for touring (station wagon/estate) rather than turbo as the UK never got turbo diesel w/s124 in standard form.

113bhp and a 4speed auto, coupled to 1600kg (3500lbs) of car means performance I 'leisurely'

It currently has about 316k miles on it, and was bought for $360. It's MOT'D until July 2019.

It currently has no modifications, and will happily run on SVO / WVO at very high percentages. Currently it is running 85% SVO and 15% diesel. It starts ok even in -3 degrees.

She needs a service (parts on order) and the autobox could do with a flush, but she starts goes and stops so I can't complain.

I'm currently getting set up to process WVO which should make the 23mpg thirst a bit more wallet friendly.

I hope so! Chain driven engines with all mechanical injection, a world away from the " black death" of modern Merc diesels

I must confess I'd much rather rely on a gear-driven engine. Replacing their duplex chain is a PITA...

Is that in USD or is there an exchange rate?

My 1979 VW diesel has 48hp and weighs a little over a ton. It can find grade differences on what looks like level ground. .....but it does have a five-speed manual.

That was £280 GBP converted to USD (roughly)

Driving it? Nearly 1200 miles in, exhaust sorted (patched), thermostat sorted and the stop valve has fixed itself

in other news, despite the Merc being, old, slow, ****ed, slow smelly and slow..

578.2 miles covered using 96L of veg (bar 6L of Derv to top off the tank and avoid an Exxon Valdez incident)

Total cost : £7.67

Or £0.013 per mile. Sub 2p per mile
