Unfortunately, I don't personally know anyone who has done it, but it is fairly common for people in the Miata community (especially those who have gone the forced induction route) to regear their cars with numerically lower final drive ratios. Too-short gearing is a common gripe on miata.net.

I believe that subbing in the the NB's 3.91 LSD also requires replacement of the axles and driveshaft, but don't quote me on it! My area of experience lies mostly with the third-gen (NC) Miata.
