The safest car in the world

... is an EV!
Tesla got a record 5.4 star safety rating for the Model S.
When the NHTSA tried to roll it over they couldn't because the center of gravity is so low. It even broke their testing rig...!

See Tesla Model S: Rated Safer Than Safe - ABC News for more details.

It is safer *because* it is an EV - there is no engine 'lump" in the front, so the entire structure can be used to absorb energy, and do so over a longer time period.

As you mentioned the low Cg is also possible *because* the Tesla Model S is an EV. It handles better *because* it is an EV. And it performs better because it is an EV. It is about 2X more efficient than a Prius. It is incredibly quiet and smooth.

The Tesla Model S is quite possibly the best car ever built.

Vindication. Also vindication against the people who claim that a huge lump of a V8 up front makes big trucks safer...

My reading was massive collapsible space in front-end collisions, low center of gravity for roll-over and beams made of nested aluminum channels for side impact, a design feature that they borrowed from space capsules.
