San Francisco's Used cooking Oil Program

This is interesting. I guess that's the end of the free fuel for the DIY guys.

Quote:
Today the city launches SFGreasecycle, a free program in which the city will pick up used cooking oil and grease from local restaurants, hotels and other commercial food preparation establishments. Those substances then will be turned into biodiesel, a fuel made of plant oil that burns cleaner than petroleum-based fuels.

They're only running b20, so there might still be some left.

Not if they can make some money at it. But Looking at the big picture it's probably a good thing.

Currently CA requires ~$400-500 in fees to legally transport VO. Even get into the racket ya gotta pay to play, so certain efficiency and driving distance figures are needed for it to be economically worthwhile. That being said, since WVO users will almost always be able to make fuel cheaper than a collection company/biodiesel maker, they could outbid restaurants for contracts. In any event, SF has the most grease co-ops so I wonder if this is reactionary in any way.
