Scangauge II "connecting" problem

I am new here...thanks for all of the great info. I have recently started a new job requiring a 140 mile commute at times. I purchased a 2002 Honda Civic and have been pleased with it's efficiency but always want more MPG's.

I thought I'd start with a Scangauge II (purchased from Ecomodder) and received it today. I plugged it in to the OBDII port on the Civic and it powers right up but never connects. It just says "connecting.." but it never actually connects.

I unplugged the battery for 15 min, checked fuses, the cig lighter works, pulled the ECU fuse for 10 min, sprayed OBDII port with contact cleaner and am at wits end.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I had this problem on a 98 civic. Mine turned out to be because I had a non-USA computer (ECU) that did not have the OBDII board. All the other parts including the plug was there. At that time OBD was a US only system. I'm not sure about your year or any since.

I had this symptom after I damaged the ScanGauge cable. Perhaps one of the data pins on your car's OBD-II port is damaged. If you have a multimeter and the pinouts of the port and ECU, this is pretty easy to test for.

Robert, I am thinking that the Civic's OBDII port is to blame. I installed the Scangauge on my other vehicle with an OBDII port and it connected within 10 seconds.

I understand about checking for voltage and have a multimeter but even with a pinout I dont think I'd know how to test the OBDII port. Maybe I am over-complicating it...??
