My wife was driving my car today with me in the passenger seat. I was giving her some tips on braking sooner, to avoid idling if at all possible. It was hilarious, because there was this ass behind us in a corvette just honking his little heart out. When we got into the other lane, he inevitably joined in on the idiotic behavior of bumper to bumperness. It seemed as if this brought us greater satisfaction than me giving him the finger. I, of course, did anyway.

Because this driver defies all logic and reason, it makes sense to display a crude gesture. It is, naturally, something that he can understand.

p.s. have you guys read Tom Vanderbilt's "Traffic"?

Had great luck with the 01 Beetle. Now my daily driver is the 96 Passat TDI. I average mid 40's and as high as 49.8 on one easy highway trip in cool weather without the AC. But here in Florida it's hard to drive without AC! My biggest jump in the Beetle was from 43 to 47mpg when i swapped out the tired injectors with some T4's (one size larger). I've read that the old Passats with the 1Z TDI motor easily get 50mpg so I'm still hopefull that when i swap injectors I'll be able to get there. my best is 983miles on one tank @ 48mpg. So if i can get 50+mpg i may be able to squeeze 1000 miles out of a single tank! This is AWESOME!!!

I gotten in the habit of looking ahead to the stoplights. I get the biggest kick out of someone speeding around me only to watch them slam on the brakes seconds later while i'm coasting up to the same red light. Sometimes i get lucky and still have some forward momentum when the light turns green. I even sometimes pulse and glide in the 35mph area of my commute through Cocoa Beach. I sometimes reflect on how it use to feel driving my F150 getting 14mpg. I still have the truck(and still love it) but don't drive it much!! 22gal of fuel a week is sure better then 71gal of gas! Even funnier is my Honda Goldwing uses more gas than my TDI. And my TDI holds 5 people and has AC!! Don't ride the Goldwing much either. LOL!

The "nut behind the wheel adjustment" continues!!!

I can tell you with certainty that turing off at lights helps a great deal! If I hit a few lights and don't key off on my way to work, my average comes out to arround 28 rathern than 30. That comes out to 5-10% improvement! 0 mpg pulles down a good average like a 1000 lb ancor.
