No. Considering how many other people, even with the same car, have been doing this for literally years, there's a good chance your transmission is just worn out and getting ready to be replaced.

that car is worth 1500 to 2000 as it is. The old hatches are desirable.

trannies are EASY to find. Pick a part places will have several.

Something in your driving style is tearing it up. Have you checked the filter? It is under the solenoid pack - remove the solenoids, clean the filter.

when you are backing, do you come to a complete stop before switching to drive? Has a teenager ever owned it?

35 or so with the auto in everyday drive fast should be expected. 40 with a 5 speed.

my 16 year old teenager goes 280 miles on 7 gallons of gas pretty consistently - and that is to and from highschool, dates, lunch, work, etc. all local miles.
