Aerodynamic U-Haul Sport Trailer

Just saw this today, and it reminded me of aerohead's work :

U-Haul: Equipment specs

Quote:
Features
- Towable by any vehicle
- Fuel-efficient shape
- Front and rear access doors
Capacity
- Volume: Up to 45 cu. ft.
- Max load: 965 lbs.
- Gross vehicle weight: 1,500 lbs. max.
- Empty weight: 535 lbs.

The only thing I don't like is the empty weight. It seems like it could be lighter. But maybe that's just the price you pay for durability.

USFRA President Jim Burkdoll told me that this was the trailer that was 'spun' at Bonneville a couple years back.No crash, but 'scary'.
Driver might have had to change his underwear.
I like this trailer, asked about purchasing one,U-HAUL said no dice!
They are robust, they have to be the way patrons abuse equipment and I also believe could be much lighter.
If things work out,I'll be able to report on the difference 'enclosing' the gap makes.

It's heavy because it is thermally insulated.

That trailer was one of a set of two that U-Haul offered in the 1990's, the other was a portable BBQ. This one was the cooler (no kidding). They envisioned a family group outing at a lake where several vehicles were involved.

I used it numerous times behind our Jeep Cherokee on Dallas - Chicago roundtrips when our son was in college. It kept us from loading the roof rack and mpg was still near 20 at 65 mph (22-24 at 70) even with the vehicle crammed to the gills with three adults and all his stuff.

Get a MASTERLOCK adjustable hitch head to use it with, and angle it slightly nose-down, barely, once loaded properly for weight. It's road manners were great.

We calculated something like 365-bottles of beer when used to spec.

If you iced down vodka instead (Texas -- where, when we grew up it was legal to drink and drive so long as one was not drunk) you could have, ah, a closed loop fuel system and range extension.

.
