Sometimes the road IS closed

Last year my wife and I went backpacking in the Goat Rocks wilderness along the PCT. We used Google maps to navigate to the trailhead, but had no cell service once we got there. Leaving the parking lot, I decided to see what the built in NAV said, just in case there was a more direct way home. I planned to make the fuel station in Morton with 100 miles of range to spare.

After 40 miles of following the NAV directions, a sign on the shoulder said "Road Closed". Since it wasn't in the road, I ignored it, especially since a pickup truck had also ignored the sign.

10 miles further down the road, a final "Road Closed" sign was placed in my lane.

We had to backtrack, adding an extra 100 miles to the trip and barely made it to Morton to refuel.

Apologies for the stupid dialog and rattles in the video. I put a cheap dashcam in to capture people backing into the car and other crazy events.

You can make it across, trust me.
Did you ever see the truck that also ignored the sign?

I bet those 50 miles back had some pretty hardcore hypermiling going on.

Google maps lets you download regional maps to local storage. They'll be up to date unlike the built-in nav system and you don't need cell service to access them.

I did eyeball that foot trail across for more than a moment.

I'm assuming the truck turned at a logging road to go camping; I never saw him again.

I had some natural hypermiling since it was steep uphill and downhill roads. Some roads were gravel, so that didn't help. I regened about 10 miles of EV range and kept that in reserve just in case I ran out of fuel. I've rolled into petrol stations after running out of fuel and having only 1 mile of EV range left. Then there is the time I ran out of both with just half a mile to go.
