Cool 94.53mpg in a 93 Festiva!

I decided to go all out before summer ends to see what this car is capable of. I had all day to do the drive so I thought I'd do a really slow jaunt for a max mpg attempt.

My approach was pulse up to 40mph and engine off coast down to 25mph (lowest speed I can hold 5th gear). I was able to pull that off on about 97% of these miles. I had the windows up, and flow through vent on low (it was overcast and about 73F so I didn't need it much.) I went a total distance of 190.2 mi on 2.012 gal (US).

I should have picked a different day perhaps since I was kinda feeling sick, but I didn't want to let the summer slip away before trying this challenge I am really excited about the results, but I think I will enjoy them more once the sickness wears off.

Nice job! Congrats!
It is nice to know what your high water mark is. Gives you a goal and known procedures that are proven to work to apply to regular driving. I always feel constrained by only driving during my commute. I need to get out an see what my new metro can do unconstrained with pure efficiency on my mind. My old metro had a best tank of 69 MPG and I really wanted to break 70 but was unable before it retired.

Congrats!

I agree with doviatt - it's fun to test a car's fuel economy limits, and show what's capable if you throw everything but the kitchen sink at it.

I think some people would argue "the sickness" is a foregone conclusion if we're out there doing stuff like this.

Thanks Darin I would say you can count me in the fold of those who have the mpg bug.

Today I am feeling pretty satisfied and a bit happier since I'm just about over my Streptococcus Pharyngitis.

My next project involves stripping a spare motor I have for the cam shaft and have it sent in for mpg optimization. Preliminary results on the 2 this guy has done for other peoples Festiva's have yielded 7 and 10mpg for first tanks respectively. I don't have a way of varifying those results, but I'm willing to take a shot that it will be worth trying.
