Survey for EOC'ers

Hey all,

I am one who does a lot of EOC during my daily 52 mile one way commute. Lots of hills give me the chance to average 6.5 miles of EOC each way per day. My last tank was 449 miles and 52 of that was EOC (thanks MPGuino). My last tank mpg was 43.4, but with 11.6% of my miles being EOC, I think I could do better. Maybe it is just because you have to go back up what you come down, and I do not go too slow, as I don't want to give someone a reason to hate hypermilers. I do DWL up the hills, but try to keep it at least 50mph by the top of the hill. What percent of your tank miles is EOC? Is 11.6% high, low, avg?

I'm gonna say that's high, but this is *very* driving context dependent.

This is a good question. I should do a map to find out for my regular commute. I do know that my "to work" trip is better because I am going downhill.

That's pretty high for me. I'm probably <5% since it' mostly highway driving for me. But then that'll probably change with the new tires...

Anyway, how do you use the MPGuino to calculate % EOC?

The MPGuino has a screen that gives Current Trip EOC Miles, Tank EOC Miles, Current Idle Gallons and Tank Idle Gallons. My to work trip is slightly better by maybe 2 mpg's than the return trip.

I have a scangauge and not a guino, so I'm guessing, but...

I'm probably over 50% EOC on my daily driving. That's 35 mph suburban streets, and 45 and 55 mph country roads. If I take a highway trip, it's probably more like 30% eoc. P&G with EOC is by far my most effective technique, and I use it ALL the time.

moorcomp,

I have a similar commute of about 110 round trip miles daily. All highway. I have looked at but not tracked my EOC per tank. I will start tracking it because you bring up a good point. It is hard to tell if coasting down the hill benefits vs DWL. I know I hate starting up a hill with out much momentum. I live on a hill so leaving home is great. I always pay it back returning home though. I don't think they balance out evenly. I have one big hill and several ups and downs during my commute. Finding the data will help me plan better for consistent results.

Good post.

On my typical 20 mile commute, I EOC for about 10% (2 miles) one way, and 20% (4 miles) the other way. There's a huge hill that I can really take advantage of coming home for a 3 mile coast.

My trip to work is mostly downhill of which I can EOC about 90%. The extended vacuum canister comes in handy on the way down. The way back maybe 15%. The hills coming back are murder on my FE with the slush box.

On my regular commute, I EOC quite a bit - up to red lights, down one long, gentle incline on the way to work. To guess, I'd say my engine is off for 40% of the time and 20% of the miles. By that math, I use something like 10% less fuel vs. idling in neutral at .25gph. YMMV, and my case is much more favorable to EOC than most.

My current work assignment has me commuting on an urban expressway: heavy traffic going 60mph in a 50mph zone, exits every 1/4 mile, etc. P&G opportunities exist, but I don't allow myself to touch the engine kill switch until I've exited the expressway. Traffic is brutal enough without having to worry about bump starting and having no power brakes. Thus, this week, it's been about 5% EOC, adding one mpg at best. Still worth it.

Hi!
Today i did test EOC .
Weather was dry but windy (10km/h with cross wind) not ideal for testing :-(
Temperature: 15°C
Test road - Trip: 106.5 km
Time: nearly 2h
I did EOC 31x. Smallest EOC was 0.5 km. Longest was 2.8km.
EOC with lights on: 90% bump, 10 % key start
0.5 km - 14x
0.6 km - 5x
0.7 km - 2x
0.8 km - 2x
0.9 km - 1x
1.0 km - 1x
1.1 km - 1x
1.2 km - 1x
1.5 km - 2x
2.0 km - 1x
2.8 km - 1x
EOC Total - 25 km, 26.625 % EOC

Total refueled - 4.47 l = 4.22l/100km

I expected better results about 3-3.5l. Maybe wind and turned lights (all day lights on -order ) did some trouble with results.

Compare to my loving DFCO (DFCO+Pulse mode):
Trip: 111km
Weather : dry, 15°C , wind lower than 5km/h,
Time: 1h 50 min
Total refueled: 4.77l = 4.30 l/100km

Conclusion:
ECO mode looks like not ideal for me.
With higher wear clutch, battery, V belt, gear-box ao. I will prefer DFCO mode
and EOC only on the distance over 1.5km.
