"Testing the waters" ads - I hate 'em!

I see a lot of ads on here, and other sites, that are people "thinking about" selling their Insight/VX/Rare Muscle Car/Collection of Faberge Eggs etc. Nothing says "I stumbled into this thing and have no idea what it's worth but think I can make money off it" faster than that.

I buy, sell, and export cars for a living. I have never said otherwise. I, however, make the effort to actually KNOW the value of the item I am selling, rather than make one of these lame posts in a forum classified section.

Seriously people, if you have something to sell, do your homework and figure out what it is worth, don't expect everyone else to do it for you! And if you can't figure out what it's worth with the entirety of the Internet at your fingertips then I guess it's worth $2, in which case if it's an Insight or a VX, I will take it!

I agree with your point, however, I recently found it useful to consult the forum rather than rely on the data available to me online.

I found a Leaf listed online for $11.5k, but KBB, Clearbook, and Edmunds all said it was worth closer to $13.5k.

According to members on this forum, the price is normal, and not really $2k under-priced. I let it go, and I'm happy I did.

I have often wanted to return free advice while it was still being dispensed, not to mention being charged for advice that you know is bad. I guess the only solution is to become a subject-matter expert on everything!

Once again, I am doomed!

I love em. I like those who even say I dont need the money or if its desirable. Its like a reverse psychology. You post a metro xfi and say you got x, whats it worth. Then the guy who wants an xfi says its worth x Ill give you 3 grand.

What drives me nuts are the ads where the owner lists all the modifications to the car with costs, and then asks for something substantially lower but still higher than typical asking prices to make it seem like a deal.

I like selling on ebay, without the reserve and with a fairly low starting point (check completed listings for a ballpark figure). Creates lots of interest, and still the market determines the value.

But for private sale, you will not get much of a response if you don't list your asking price. "how much you got?" is a big red flag.
