New vehicles must average 40 mpg by 2026, up from 28 mpg

On the news they said this was to reduce our dependency on gas.

That should reduce prices on top of reducing how much each vehicle consumes, but I did need to independently verify this will be the average.

For some reason the talking heads didn't specify.
Quote:
NHTSA projects that the new rules will raise the price of a new vehicle in the 2029 model year by $1,087.
which would further increase the already crazy used car market.
Quote:
The new requirements increase gas mileage by 8% per year for model years 2024 and 2025 and 10% in the 2026 model year.
No they don't. Everybody knows that 28 x 1.08 x 1.08 x 1.1 = 35.92

It would be more like 12, 12, and 14%.

That would take you from 28 to 40.

Not even my HX is rated 40 MPG average.

The delta in the overall fleet total average must be about $1000, so the capitalists just take it in through their manufacturers rather than their oil companies. Plus $87 to make it worth their time.

The Hot VWs Mileage Motor only made it to 39.9MPG. The only aero aid was a Herrod's Helper. Fender skirts might have put them over the top.

My fleet average went down when I sold the 45MPG Dasher diesel.

Can't happen. Vehicles have a 5 year production time frame, so whatever is coming in 2026 is already baked in. Writing something in some document and declaring it so doesn't make it so.

I mean, that shouldn't be hard to accomplish, even without hybrids.
At worst they might have to discontinue a few of the most gas guzzling engines or models to reach that as an average.

Our hybrid doesn't even get over 45mpg.
Sounds like more virtue signaling.

Maybe. I remember once upon a time if your car wouldn't make 0 to 60 under 6 seconds you wouldn't buy it. My daughter's new "hotrod" takes 15
