Here is a treasure trove of data on the auto industry going back 50 decades for those that like data.

Raw data:
https://www.epa.gov/automotive-trend...a#DetailedData

2021 Report:
https://nepis.epa.gov/Exe/ZyPDF.cgi?Dockey=P1013L1O.pdf

Random 2021 auto facts

85.7% of light duty vehicles had gas engines, 8.9% hybrid, 1.2% diesel, 3.1% EV, 1% PHEV

34.4% are turbocharged. 45.4% have stop/start. 1% have manual transmissions

79.4% of trucks are 4WD. 56% of all vehicles are 4WD

Individual manufacturer's CAFE varies WILDLY based on the footprint rule. For 2020 the lowest was Hyundai at 198 g/mi CO2. The highest large manufacturer was Stellantis at 268 g/mi CO2.

Aston Martin, Honda, Subaru, Tesla, and Volvo generated net GHG credits in 2020

Every manufacturer except for McLaren is sitting on a stockpile of credits. In a shocker - Stellantis has the most credits @ 45 Tg of CO2 (because they buy Tesla's credits) with Honda in 2nd place at 39 Tg, Toyota in 3rd with 27 Tg, and GM just off the podium with 24 Tg.

Some fun data from the EPA data set below.

In 1981 the average US vehicle made 102 hp, weighed 3202 lbs, went 0-60 in 15.6 seconds, and averaged 20.5 mpg (436 g/mi CO2)

In 2021 the average US vehicle made 252 hp, weighed 4287 lbs, went 0-60 in 7.7 seconds, and averaged 25.3 mpg (399 g/mi CO2)

Ah, didn't realize this was about CAFE, where the stated figures aren't actual.

Regarding acceleration, supposedly the Mazda does 0-60 in 7.5 seconds, but I highly doubt that. The thing feels like it has turbo lag because it does nothing for the 1st second after mashing the gas pedal. The sluggishness makes passing more dangerous or not feasible because of how gutless the thing is.

Next car needs to do 0-60 in 6 seconds or better. I don't get any thrill out of that because I ride a motorcycle, but it's useful in operating the vehicle safely.

Introduce european levels of fuel taxes, and they will love them...

Doubtful. Americans will choose a more powerful hybrid with an automatic transmission over a small gas engine with a manual transmission.

True. Especially the ones that buy the new cars.

Although I wonder if the used car shortage may make people that would previously wait for cheap used cars to turn out on the market to instead save up for new cars. That would introduce a different car buyer segment to the car buying industry, one looking for the cheapest new cars out there, which may favor small manual transmission cars.

I guess I'm being hopeful.

It's my intent [at this time] to buy a first new car -- a $17.9K vehicle with a twin-motor single-speed drivetrain with torque vectoring. I'd always said I'd give up on VW Beetles when I could have a UFO. This is as close as I'm likely to come.

Do you know what is crazy?

I have $11,027.44 in my Navy Federal savings account.

I have $5,000 in my Bank of America checking account.

I have over $1,000 cash... somewhere...

Where is it?

Cars.com says the 2022 Chevrolet Spark LS starts at $15,695.

If that is actually the out-the-door price I could pay cash for a brand-new car.

I would rather fix my Civic, and that is way down the list.

I haven't paid rent in over a year. I used to do speech therapy with my brother in exchange for rent, but I didn't do that for several months. I did 4 sessions and then some short Alaskans flip turned everything upside down.

I keep planning on working with him and then something comes up.

I also plan on working out and then end up eating something quickly at 5pm because I haven't had anything to eat or drink all day.

Last week I found the dremel I bought Mom (which she refuses to use), figured out how to install the cutoff wheel, went out with my work towel and an extension cord I was positive wasn't long enough, and then came in for another extension cord, but my brother was locked out of his iPad. I guess that something popped up, he tried to make it go away, and he got in over his head.

I am proud of him, though. Even though he was locked out of his communication device, he still used it to communicate!

Please excuse the picture of a screen, but I didn't know how to take a screen shot of a child's plaything, nor if iOS was reinstalling or what.

I didn't realize he did that. I thought that I just had enough time to cut nails. I had him sign "I want 2 cookies please," asked his provider to get him the cookies, and ignored the girls saying "Ooh, we want cookies!"

One of them told me they were hungry as I was trying to guess Mom's password and I said that I would cook dinner after I saw my client, but that was the fateful client where their mom arrived as I was waiting to start, she left during the session, and she declared that I refused to talk to her.

She never gave me a chance.

So, today I found another extension cord, grabbed the dremel, replaced the cutoff wheel, discovered that one corner of the tent, which has undoubtedly killed the lawn, completely pulled the stake out of the ground.

There is just a big hole now, and without being staked properly, the tent isn't sturdy.

I cut one nail and the cutoffwheel broke, as well as the attachment, so I looked into whether knippers would properly cut nails.

There is some debate on whether they can hold up, but there are several reviews on each the 14" and 16" knippers at Harbor Freight that they cut nails well.

Ace and Cal Ranch are closer, but if they have knippers they are far more expensive.

I have 35 minutes before my first of 3 clients in a row, so I hopefully have enough time to buy knippers, knip, and get ready for work.

By the way, I also haven't filed my taxes yet. I usually do that as soon as I have most of the information, I estimate the rest, update as I receive my forms, and pay around $5,000 on the last day, so I don't know how much of my savings are actually mine.

Maybe if I wrapped a blade with tape and used it without a handle.
