Timing advance or retard?

What gives the best mileage at cruise (70) mph? I figure I would bounce it off you guys to get a direction as to where to start my tuning.

Generally more advance is better up to the point the engine starts pinging.

I set my timing at 8 degrees advance for the best fuel economy on my 1998 Metro and set the timing on my 1995 Chevy 4X4 to 5 degrees advance.

Best way to find the "sweet spot" is to mark your timing where it is now. Advance it slightly and test drive. Under accel or load, if you hear ping or valve clatter, retard slightly until you get no more ping. Do this in small, gradual steps.

'99 Suburban 2WD 350 auto. I will be using Jet DST for the programming and Auto Tap/ScanGauge for the logging. What should I log in autotap to make this easier? I have zero knock with the stock config. Kind of makes we worry a little... it should at least ping to figure out it's timing.

I have my timing set 6 degrees more advanced than stock. So far, haven't noticed any fe differences. But I need to run a few more tanks through.
Did you do that all at once, or in little steps? IF steps, did you find better economy at any of the changes you made so far?
