Torque for Apple devices

The suction cup mount for my UG has been falling off the dash frequently, causing the gauge to dangle off to the side. When I open the door, it falls in between the door and the dash, where it would be smashed if I were to close the door.

Not wanting to accidentally smash the UG, I decided to make a better mount. After sitting in the car and coming up with a strategy, I exited to get the parts I would need. By habit, I shut the door... smashing my UG! I had driven for months with this problem without issue, and when I finally go to fix it, I destroyed the gauge.

Out of frustration I've decided not to spend another $60 for an UG that is basically the same as the one I destroyed. Instead I dug out my ELM237 device that I bought on Ebay for $9, and finally tinkered with it on an Android device. It seems like it will give me 90% of what I had in the UG, plus some other interesting stuff such as G-force plotting and 0-60 timing.

As much as I like Android and loath Apple, the iPhone is what my work has issued me. Should I pay $6 to get the app on iPhone even though it's free on Android and I don't want to support Apple? Is the app transferable to other Apple devices if I ever get a different phone?

I have no idea about the apple stuff, but Torque is well worth the $5 for the pro version on android.

This. As far as I know the ELM you have won't work with iPhone. There is a few week old thread on here about one that works with iPhone but is very costly and basically better off buying another UG. I'd get an old Android and DL the app and hard wire it to the car fir switched power source.

I'm guessing once the Torque app is purchased, it's transferable to other devices if I change devices? Does the purchase include future updates?

I took the free Torque/Android for a spin today and was mostly happy with it. My only complaints were a lack of open/closed loop indication, which I use to inform me when I've entered DFCO, and the MPG gauge said I averaged 60 mpg. That's about twice as optimistic as reality, and there is no adjustment to this. I'm also not sure how to get gallons of fuel remaining. Perhaps this isn't adjustable either. Oh, and I don't think the voltage readout was working either.

Yes and yes. Purchases on Google Play are linked to your account, not the device, so the app is usable on any device that you use that email to sign in.

Has anyone done a direct compare Torque to SG or UG? Thought is was a little slow to respond. Maybe just my cheap phone. Certainly better than nothing.

I've noticed Torque is slower than the UG, but there is a setting that might speed it up. I'll try it and see if I can get it to update the gauges more frequently than about 4 seconds.

Torque is slower then a scan-gauge but better then nothing. The apple stuff is wierd and I never got it to work you need an expensive obd2 dongle for apple stuff. You can find a android phone or tablet for $20-$30 anything will work. The better the device the faster it will be tho (more ram and better processor).

This POS phone will work fine. Torque is worth $5 will show you more then Ultragauge or scangauge but not everything will work.

You have to calibrate it just like an UG or SC before it will give you real numbers, but even if you just use it with fake numbers it doesn't make a difference if the trip to work you get a 55MPG* and tomorrow you get a 65MPG* you still know you did better today then yesterday even if you only got 15MPG and 25MPG.

You can use it as a dash cam and have it make a video with an overlay of stats like instant MPG or TPS and watch it and learn where you messed up or a clock so you can count that 2 mile coastdown with a GPS speed overlay. Its bad ass and I hope it improves because it does have some bugs and mixed up data.
