Toyota 1/X 150 mpg concept car

It weighs less than 1000 lbs, seats 4 with as much room and the same acceleration as a Prius, and gets 150 mpg. What's not to like about it?

Toyota 1/X

You won't like the price. This is due to the massive amounts of carbon fiber used to keep the weight down.

Not trying to bash the car. The mileage is simply amazing. Its just not going to happen though.

Yeah, it's true that cf is much more expensive per pound than steel, but the trade-off is that the 1/X uses a lot fewer pounds...

OTOH, concept cars are just that ... concepts to get the creative juices running. It will be interesting to see how much of the 1/X's technology makes it into production hybrids in the coming years.

Hello -

This is just what Amory Lovins has been squaking about for the last 10 years :

What is a Hypercar Vehicle?
http://www.rmi.org/sitepages/pid191.php

That dovetailed into a carbon-fiber composites company :

At Fiberforge we make advanced-composites affordable for today's leading manufacturers!
http://www.fiberforge.com/

The way I see it, it will "creep up" into different auto industry components. The whole auto won't be fiber, but maybe the heaviest parts will be replaced over time.

Our company has a carbon fiber division; we had a short run making carbon fiber hoods for Gm's corvette, but it didn't pan out well for either of us. From what I hear the stuff is hard to work with in a production situation. I hope the situation changes.
