Having seen so many kids playing racing games on their phones, it wouldn't be much of a surprise for me to see some fully-digital driving interfaces resorting to such input methods. Possibly also making it easier to provide LHD and RHD suitability for a single vehicle too.

Only one little catch: systems inop redundancy. No connection no steering, a real pita at freeway speeds

One of my favorite video game experiences was splitting the duty of acceleration and steering with my friend in Gran Turismo. We were terrible at first, but with enough practice began to win races. Just a tangent thought while imagining passing steering control to the rear occupants.
