Toyota Celica, automatic coasting in neutral

Is it ok to pop my Celica into neutral and coast a half mile here and there?

I've been doing it lately but I've heard you are not supposed to do that with some automatic trans cars.

BTW - on a recent tank with highway driving and some coasting and other "hypermiling" driving techniques, I squeaked out 40 mpg, beating my old record by 2.5 mpg. Oh, I also pumped the tires to 42

Is your engine on or off? Most of the problems come from EOC - engine off coasting - with an auto tranny. Without the motor spinning with the drivetrain, the oil might not be circulating enough. Half a mile here and there probably won't hurt anything. It's when you get into rolling down mountains at high speed like I do here in Colorado. 15 or 20 miles without the engine on probably wouldn't be good for an auto tranny.
