I would imagine so. The electric drive isn't physically coupled to the gas engine at all.

As the owner of a 2007 Yaris this is my dream Yaris hybrid:
add the following to the stock Yaris

1. 1 meter long boat tail
2. full under tray
3. improved front end aero...
4. Cd of under 0.20
5. 2 rear wheel 10kw motor/generaters
6. 100kg plug in battery pack
7. all the controlers & stuff...

For a resulting FE of 2.5 L/100km [94 mpg]...& preformance to boot

In thinking about the rear wheel hub motors, it occured to me that the more powerfull the hub motor/generate the heavier it is. the other question is how and when would AWD be of use? Low traction conditions such as snow, ice and wet mud . This would only need low HP, on the order of 3 - 6 KW [4 - 8 HP] per rear wheel. The other advantage of this type of layout is it is independent of the gas/diesel engine and can be programed for all sorts of things...
