As I understand it, the SUV picture was posted for the glory of it's rear deflector spoiler ( to be repurposed) - he has a PICKUP truck.

my 2nd gen dakota used to get 23mph at the most during summer. after lowering it and a friend put a “cold”( actually warm) air intake on it now ive been getting 25 mpg at the most during fall and winter. i suspect lowering it made the most difference. i havent driven it much this spring so the mogs could be higher than that in hot weather
i also didnt see any gain with fiberglass truck topper. i it weighs too much and im not going to use it anymore.

A half-tonneau gives lockable storage behind an open bed.

ive never tried that but i heard half cover can be better. mine was a full cover and it didn’t do me any good for mpg. it was nice to lock tools in when i was at a construction site but the hinge would freeze in the winter and i couldn’t get it open.

The half cover sounds intriguing, but the bed is already only 5ft long. I'll be doing a full cover.
This is a long term project. Right now the truck is in a shop having some frame work done so it'll be quite a bit lower than stock.
From the sound of things, moving the exhaust to exit from the tailgate will be a net gain, provided I can route it there. There's a few other things going on that might prevent this that I won't be able to check on until the truck comes home. In the meantime I'll build a bed cover spoiler as described for my daily to see if it makes a difference or not. If I can scrape enough material together I'll also build an underspoiler to see what that does for me. I'll run one, then the other, then both and see how I do for a month on them. Generally I see 18MPG out of my daily.

Hal-tonneau and half-cover are halfway there.
ecomodder.com/blog/aerocaps-for-pick-up-trucks/
A full cap on a full length bed that meets the top of the tailgate is too fast.
The example at Permalink #2 has the right shape, but nobody uses it. It immobilizes the tailgate and would work best on a slammed minitrick.
edit:

I think this could have bevels at the left and right ends. The manager knew it helped the mileage, but he didn't know how much.

At first, I thought this was a cap.
Pity.

the slant aero top would reduce rear traction or mess with the spoiler they have now.
Suspect they are traction limited as it is.
