Tuner chips?

I am curious if anyone here has ever tested tuner chips that have claims of improved fuel economy. I have seen mainstream ones and this one that seems a bit more sketchy.

Chips

1) The concept is valid. In the early 1990s, GM brought an Oldsmobile to Bonneville, where they made run after run with different chips. The attache they were carried in was referred to as the 'million-dollar briefcase.'
2) Variable-Valve-Timing might still be a function of oil pressure, but ignition timing, fuel injector nozzle dwell , and turbo waste-gate would remain candidates for electronic controlled.
3) For EPA compliance and vehicle certification, one might presume that the automaker had already optimized the ECU and sensors.
4) Personally, I'd avoid them like how people used to avoid plagues.
5) For meaningful fuel savings, one has to attack rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag.
6) You can purchase a bona-fide 350%-to-400% mpg improvement today simply by moving to an electric vehicle.

You can tune a car to increase fuel economy. However, in general, the ones that actual work are illegal and increase emission levels to achieve those fuel savings. If the manufacturer doesn't say it is EPA certified or has a CARB executive order number the tune is illegal to use on-highway.

However, those tunes are specific to your car. Anything that says it can be plugged into the OBDII port of any car and reduce fuel consumption by 15 - 30% is snakeoil.

You upload/download software through the obd2 port unless you disassemble the case. Ask any dealer except tesla. Can be ota, except anything before 2015 is turned off by the phone carriers

Hmmm not sure about 911 calls auto initiated by the airbag.

Otherwise more than 5% improvement without more emissions or less HP is oil extract of snake.

Gasoline engines can be leaned to get up a 20% boost in fuel economy. It makes more NOx. Not really a pollutant unless you live in California. Since they have the top 7 worst polluted cities in the US, I wouldn't encourage making it worse.
