It's either a trial before deploying it to operate at those low-emission zones enforced in some European cities or just some marketing stunt to show-off as an early adopter of advanced technologies.

IIRC there were some tax rebates for CNG, plus the technical nightmare of emissions enforcement in newer Diesel engines while their spark-ignited counterparts haven't been under the same degree of scrutiny. Well, since most of the urea used in the production of DEF is synthetized from natural gas, it does make some sense to use CNG directly as a fuel instead.
