Variable Discharge Turbine

It's in the lower right.

It doesn't state directly what the thrust amounts to, thrust and shaft power being apples and oranges; but the supercharged version of the engine had 3500 horsepower and this configuration with supercharger and turbocharger had 4300.

So, in addition to the Meredith Effect P-51 and FW-190, and the ducted-fan cooling on Zeppelin engine nacelles, there is this. One evolutionary step short of the turbo-prop.

The corncob engine by itself ultimately became too complex, then rendering a turboprop a much more reasonable option for most operators. So, this halfway evolutionary step was more like a half-assed step.

Actually the first allied jet was a turboprop shoved into a biplane in Britain sometime around WW2. Somewhere during the first test flight the prop separated, the rest is history.
