Alright, now I've given this a bit of thought when trying think up efficiency mods for my Firebird.

Now, I'm not putting a turbo 2cyl in there. A man has pride.

The closest thing I've thought of to what is being described that wouldn't involve a herculean engineering effort would be to reverse-mount a tranfer case with a low-range. As opposed to having 2:1 available on demand, imagine having 1:2 available on demand. This is the line of reasoning, however, from someone with oodles of spare torque. My LT1 had more torque than most trucks for the next decade.
