So I got my Ultragauge finally (and I love it) and have been playing around with making a warm air intake. After trying about 4 different designs and not getting anywhere I finally got the ball rolling. The first 3 designs i couldn't get the IAT over 120 deg. Finally success....got the IAT up to around 150 deg. (I stole the design from a metro website but don't tell anyone) Took the wife to school and noticed a huge difference. Of course the power is down but who cares. Idle gph dropped as well from around .19 to i even saw a .15 but mostly .16 to .17 when totally warm. Next step some ABA testing but might be awhile.

When my car is warmed up and the AI is less than 100F the gph is .25
From 100-110F it is .18-.19
From 110-130F it goes down to .15
Above 130F it goes back up to .18-.19

Seems like it has a happy place but don't know what it would take to keep it in that range other than an adjustable opening block.

This is with ambient temps in the 70's so summer time might net a block reduction just to keep AI a little cooler.

So far the warmer it gets the happier it seems. I'm going to do some testing when i can.

Watch your GPH and your LOD during these tests to see if they corolate...

I did some pretty thorough ABA WAI testing on my xB here. Bottom line: no significant mpg difference, despite raising my intake air temperature 60-65 degrees F above ambient temps, and 30-35 degrees above stock air intake temps. Mine is a MAF system. The only benefits I've heard of come with WAIs on MAP systems, but I have yet to see any scientific testing results from anyone showing any conclusive WAI FE benefits.

Physics tells you that cold air is denser than warm air, therefore it takes less fuel in warm air to reach 14.7 to 1 afr. I talked to a friend who has his doctorates degree, is a genius has like 180 patents to he name. He agreed and also stated the closer you get to combustion the more efficient an engine will be. I am sure there is eventually a trade off somewhere. I have, and I think Bharvey does too, a MAP system.

I know the theory, as that's why I did the testing, but got no bananas. I'd love to see some good ABA results proving WAI benefits. Darin's testing at metrompg and mine were both MAF systems, and showed no benefits. Looking forward to your write-up. Show me pics of your set-up, as I have 2000 and 2006 Elantras to convert, if you can show me some concrete benefits. See my write-up in my earlier link, and G/L!

LOD is % engine load as measured by Scangauge and Ultragauge. It allows consistent acceleration to fit your engine's BSFC map.

i run Ram Air Cold Induction and know that there are times and condition when i need WAI .. 1# 35 F and humid for Carburetor Icing 2# to enhance heating to Operating Temps on start up #3 You add more choices

it would be easy to fit on my machine [if i could find the appropriate shutter/valve assy to change between the HAI {from an OEM stove on exhaust Manifold #1 [not currently installed]} that pipe measures about 550F
i think i would want an operator controlled flapper/mixing valve adjusted in reference to my Air Intake Temp Sensor [operator reference only . no computer controle ]

from factory it had a Bi-metallic temp sensitive *flapper* one of the sensory pleasures of this type hearing the Ting Ting ting of the flapper on idle.. however 30+ years and the bi-metallic failed and fell away..
