What have you done to 1984 Mercedes 190d diesel engine for more MPG?

I am going to look at low mileage 1984 190d diesel later today for sale with 5speed.

Other than the usual exterior mods which I look forward to completing and posting here.

What can be done to the engine to Gut it or make it more efficient:
1. make sure all maintenance is up to date
2. Remove the EGR, not sure why but I read this helps???

Any other ones?

Ultimately; a 2600lbs MB that fits 4~5 people with a good size trunk and 35mpg~40mpg sounds too good to be true. I do drive 70~80 miles a day at least, so reliability is key as well.

Best,
bigC
