CRX HF motor and trans. I'm not sure they were originally imported into Canada, though. They work best in the lightweight good-aero CRX HF, of course.

A 1st-gen Insight drivetrain is also very good and gives good MPG. Best in a 1st-gen Insight, of course.

I think you are going to have the easiest time using an engine from the same generation, the d15z1 was only used in the 5th generation, '92-95 civic VX, it makes sense in my mind to put an engine from a civic HX in the 6th and 7th generation civic.
As time went on advancements were made, both to the mechanics of the engines, reducing friction and so on, but also to the sensors that were used and the number of sensors.

It's all in the trans. You can do the 8 valve motor from the cx or the hx any d series but source a cx/vx trans. 40+ in my cx in summer. You could always get a 92 vx in Canada I think that was the only year they were available there. Or you could import one from japan or USA.

Never bought from them but heard ok stuff about them.
