Nowadays either a CVT or a hybrid drivetrain could enhance the viability of a turboshaft in a car, but I wouldn't really hold my breath for that due to the high EGTs which may pose as a danger.

High EGT? How so? Lots of it to disspate which is an issue, but it shouldn't be hotter than an equivalent compression cycle engine running at full power, below stoichmetric..

Maybe I was considering the hazard to be at the same extent of what we see in airliner engines, which are usually at an order of magnitude much greater to even fit into a car (or truck). Well, even though I don't remember the EGT of, let's say, a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT-6B which could be the most likely to be fitted into an application which would otherwise fit a big-block V8, it's still higher than in a reciprocating engine.
