Why not using the trailer to travel with your grandchildren? BTW one of the things I was never able to do and really miss is camping with my grandfather...

RV fineness ratio and Cd
Here is a pictorial drag table adapted from research done by R.Barth in Germany.
It's the nearest shape to RV's and you can see how there is a 'sweetspot' with regards to a drag minimum and length.

Nice, and the size range varies from Bambi/Papoose sized up to The Long, Long Trailer sized.

You could look into getting a Vixen RV they were relatively small I believe 21ft which could fit into a standard garage. They also had good aero properties less than .30 which is better than a bunch of cars these days. I also believe some models were equipped with a Turbodiesel engine which helped them average around 30mpg.

Good luck — total production 587.
But there's an owners association and their 'for sale' page has eight [undated] listings.

Spotted this Volkswagen T4 with German plates in my hometown last year during the FIFA World Cup.
Though its aerodynamics are not "perfect", still seems to be decent and with some room for improvements.

cRiPpLe_rOoStEr -- the T4 bubble top appears optimal. The existing tumblehome is projected upward and then it's finished off with a Template-y curve.
Hersbird -- That last interior is nicely laid out. I presume the cupholders are OEM. There does seem to be one section of mattress that appears from nowhere.
I'd want my interior done in bamboo and seagrass mats

And I had posted the interior of the Suzuki Air Triser in the un-aerodynamic thread, but it fits here.

Three-door, right hand drive. I like the stowaway steering wheel. And the rock-and-roll 3rd seat cushion.

That 3rd panel is just behind the couch, I assume it stays and the couch pulls forward and flattens.
here is a whole discussion with lots of pics

I honestly don't understand why Volkswagen doesn't even try to bring its own vans to the American market again.
